Yes, I saw this on MTV. At the time, I loved it so much that I recorded it later. Yes, it really is THAT amazing. Beyonce isn't a very good actress... but she pulls through in all of her musical performances throughout this film (muchmuchmuch better than her solo ballad in DreamGirls).
I hadn't heard of Mehki Phifer before, but the talent he put behind his character in this film was so resounding to me, that I looked him up. He's fantastic! This is a very intelligent modern adaptation of a big-time classic that is worth some viewing time.
