A mesmerizing piece of film making by assayas who seems to be exactly in his realm with this subject matter. assayas has demonstrated his talents in previous films by using our affinity for "cool" and "envy" of "glamorous lifestyles" in post-industrialist capitalist societies as a pallet for showing us something more profound about the problems that such lust poses for not only us but those that live this lifestyle.
'carlos' is the perfect figure for assayas' point of view, and edgar ramirez is the perfect actor for carrying out this persona on film. his performance is unforgettable, and it disappoints me that he was not nominated for any major awards that I can recall.
This is a must see for any thoughtful person concerned about making a better society because it raises many questions about the contradictions that exist within all structures that compete for different versions of such a world. a tour de force.
