Review of Carlos (2010) by Ricardo O — 01 Sep 2011
This is an excellent film. I watched the full 5+ hour TV mini-series version and I can hardly think of what they could have cut. The first two parts are fantastic! The second part featuring the raid on the OPEC headquarters and taken them hostage on a plane was incredibly directed.
The acting is terrific all around especially from the star Edgar Ramirez as the terrorist Illich "Carlos the Jackal" Ramirez Sanchez who carries the film on his back and commands the viewersâ(TM) attention with his presence.
But if only the film carried the brilliance of the first two parts into the third, I would have given it a 4.5 star rating easily. But as the second part begins to end the story starts to drag. But this is only natural as the years following the OPEC incident weren't very interesting, as he had become an overweight has-been.
Yet this is a film that is worth watching, whether it's the full-televised version or the shortened theatrical version because it shows what it was like in Europe and the Middle East during the turbulent Cold War era.
It's a fascinating experience. I highly recommend watching this. It is one of the best films of the year. 8/10.
