This 5 1/2 hour epic movie about about "Carlos the Jackal", draws you in immediately with a charismatic performance by Edgar Ramirez, who has parlayed his experience playing terrorists in Vantage Point and The Bourne Ultimatum into this star-making turn as the international terrorist "revolutionary" best known for taking the OPEC conference hostage in 1975.
The director and star leave no doubt that narcissism is the main motivation for Carlos' ambition. He is clearly intoxicated with the power he initially wields, but his muscular physique grows soft and fat through the movie as the Cold War wanes and he becomes a fugitive with no more revolutionary allies.
The film is set to be shaved down to 2 1/2 hours for the general theatrical release. Here's hoping they cut most of the third act which, like it's protagonist, is bloated and uncompelling.
