Review of Carlos (2010) by Trent R — 01 Sep 2011
Fast-paced blend of sex, terror, doc elements and period detail which at times can recall favorably classic political thrillers. Action sequences and procedure are not up to Frankenheimer or Lumet standards, but the intent is there such that a more `60s Euro documentary style is often sacrificed in the process.
It does not approach Pontecorvo or Costa-Gavras quality, but aims at more popular observations on terrorism, state power and the personalities involved. The first part is particularly fast-paced, although scenes seem repeated in variation later on.
The ambition seems to be more in terms of scope and appeal, which it largely achieves.
