Review of Carlos (2010) by Dickie L — 01 Sep 2011
Who knew a 2.5 hour abridged version of a 330 minute telemovie would make such great cinema. Such is Carlos, an extremely ambitious, multilayered, multilingual, sprawling epic about the life of Carlos the Jackal.
Propelled by a charismatic, powerhouse central performance by Edgar Ramirez, this is a complex, well researched reconstruction of a 20th century terrorist, his motives, his dealings with allies and foes and his personal life.
Great attention to detail and authenticity make you feel like you're really back in the 70s and 80s. Strangely, the shortened theatrical version feels very fluid - if anything the pace seems too leisurely at times, which makes me wonder how the original version plays at twice the length.
Hopefully I'll get the chance to find out soon.
