Review of Carlos (2010) by Irene M — 16 Dec 2011
It is amazing what fearless audacity can accomplish -- in Carlos' case, a sensational international terrorist career that lasted 30 years and rocked the world of his day. This is based on a true story that has all the elements of a great drama. Captivating characters with passion for a cause, adventure, risk, love, sex, life and death. Some will agree with Carlos' view of the world, I suspect most will be horrified by the cruel nature of the events. It does not matter. Both will be equally taken by the strength of the story and by Édgar Ramírez's great performance. Édgar is impressive in incarnating Carlos' intensity, intelligence and zeal. Particularly amazing is the naturalness with which he switches between several different languages, often mid-scene, without loss of power and focus. Along the fascinating ride that Carlos' story is, the viewer is also cued into what was going on in the international political background as these events took place.
We decided to watch the complete 5 hr+ mini series instead of the condensed theater version. Most reviewers seemed to indicate that the material was too abundant for a single feature film. After watching the series, I have to agree. I could not imagine reducing the length without significant loss. Well directed with an intelligent script, this is a good three evening proposition.
