Review of Carlito's Way (1993) by Andrei J — 21 Feb 2011
Carlito's way is a powerful and poetic drama about love, fate and survival. Al Pacino used to be the go to guy in Hollywood and it this film once again shows why, his on screen aura is magical and Brian de Palma was right when he said: 'Al Pacino moves beautifully'. I urge everyone who watches this movie to see it again and only look at Pacino's Hands, it's a world of its own, amazing.
The story is the nitty gritty and you can tell that it is based on a book, good backstory, good characters and a very realistic setting, that is both familair to genre enthusiasts and unique, being primarily concernd wirth Spanish gangsters instead of the usual Italian mob.
The cast is a who is who of supporting actors and they all do a terrific job, it is interesting to see heavyweight Viggo Mortensen in a tiny role, but he does a good job, although his playing style changed a lot over the years and he finally fgured out that less is more.
Without spoiling it, I can see that the ending is quite harsh but it makes perfect sense and is another argument why this one stands out from the crowd of your usual gangster life movies.
A masterpiece.
