Review of Carlito's Way (1993) by Pranay R — 04 Aug 2014
"My Puerto Rican ass ain't supposed to have made it this far. Most of my crew got washed a long time ago. Don't worry. My heart, it don't ever quit.".
I was watching all Al Pacino classics the other day and I stumbled upon this little underrated film called Carlito's Way. Little did I know at the time, that this was going to be one of my favorite cinematic experiences of all time.
The movie does more than justice to all it's themes of crime, loyalty, love, friendship and escaping the past. It has a solid script written by Dave Koepp, which when paired with the exceptional acting done by Al Pacino, makes for one hell of a piece of art. The compelling story of a former Puerto Rican criminal trying to escape his past not only keeps you gripped but has your emotions running high throughout the experience. Brian DePalma, like always has directed the movie beautifully. Sean Penn has also delivered a strong performance as Pacino's coke head lawyer.
In my opinion Carlito's Way is extremely underrated and deserves to be ranked with, if not over, other Pacino classics like The Godfather and Scarface.
