Review of Carlito's Way (1993) by Kevin H — 19 Apr 2009
Brian DePalma directs Al Pacino in a film about a Cuban gangster. Is it Scarface again? Thankfully no, Carlito's Way is instead an excellent gangster pic that rises above the myriad of cheap, genre based films of the same type and becomes an instant classic.
Pacino has never been better than he is here and he is certainly helped along by a supporting cast that includes great performances from John Leguizamo, Luis Guzman and Sean Penn. The film's pacing is superb and DePalma even gets to use his trademark train station in a sequence towards the end.
A great film which does a lot to erase the memory of Scarface from my mind.
