Review of Carlito's Way (1993) by Marcus R — 08 May 2011

This is the second time I've watched this film. Someday I want to be as clever and crafty a director as DePalma in Carlito's Way. There is so much going on in this film - metaphors in camera shots, brilliantly choreographed 1-shots, acting - superb.
The worst part is a cathartic realization that no matter what happens, all the characters will reach their own fate. And there are many opportunities for them to turn and avoid that fate, but there is something deeply rooted in all of them. I guess that's a sign of great writing.
This is by far one of my favorite films of all time.

1st Review:
This is one of the most well crafted films I have ever seen! I can't wait to re-watch this just for the scene where Carlito's nephew or cousin convinces him to come along for a money drop off. I will study that scene as a director as a lesson in suspense because it's nerve wracking - even when you know how the scene will end.
The cinematography was breath taking - very theatrical in it's blocking and it lent so much to the story.
At first I doubted the credibility since Pacino is playing another south American (a' la Scarface). I got past that after I remembered that Al Pacino is one of the greatest actors alive. He holds so much authority while saying very little at times. I could go on and on about the acting in this movie but I won't. Go watch it yourself.
Brian DePalma is one amazing director.
