Review of Carlito's Way (1993) by Spyros T — 05 Aug 2011
A more down to earth gangster in a film that felt more like an unofficial Scarface sequel.
DePalma in great form, the camerawork, music, use of environment, it all creates this tension and visceral experience that is unique about his films.
Definitely has moments of cheesiness that DePalma is known for, but all in all a solid gangster/crime drama. The central romance doesn't really work, but the ending is fantastic. Pacino and Penn in great performances, however I thought Penelope Ann Miller bought it down a peg, I really wish there was a different actress in that role. The camerawork during the climatic 20 minute chase scene at the end is brilliant. Nail-biting filmmaking by DePalma!
