Review of Carandiru (2003) by Ryan J — 02 Mar 2010
Just switched on SBS the other night and this just started, luckily I sat through the whole thing because it is a great film. some good acting, great scenes and no holds barred acts of violence as it's life they only know.
follows a doctor through his work doing blood tests for prisoners in said jail in sao paulo, a jail meant for 4000 it holds over 7000, with AIDS spreading like wild fire. most characters are useless humans who deserve everything they get (just dont be in for rape or you'll be the lowest of the low) but it's compelling viewing.
the final set piece is one of sheer brutality. highly recommended for anyone who likes a good foreign film.
