Review of Caramel (2007) by Dion D — 14 Feb 2009
An inspiring and delightfully presented movie of true friendship. The movie amiably portrays Mediterranean life and its colours and life choices. People who call this ?soap opera? ?chick flick? or try to compare it with some other movie, they need to search a little bit deeper inside of themselves and stop being so plain in their mind and ego. A truly enjoyable movie.
The movie explores certain elements of life that we all have experienced one way of the other regardless of where each of us comes from, but this movie is done in style. The characters are so beautifully intertwined together that the entire movie has a warm, temperature flows from one story to the next without typical tied-up endings.
The portrayal of sacrificea person has to make for a family member is something that has been played in Mediterranean stories for centuries. Giving her last change of a ?true? love is all saddening and touching but at the same time brave, to realise where ones true soul lies.
The main character affection for a married man portrays a struggle that not all ?good men are married or taken? but are still out there just waiting to be discovered. The romance that evolves between the main character and the police men has certain element of charm and allure.
The struggle of keeping to ones cultural tradition is illustrated by Nisrine character where she has lost her virginity before she gets married. Centuries that has been part of certain Mediterranean cultures where women had to strive hard to keep to ones tradition.
As all women years for a forbidden love another is locked in a battle with age and perseverance of looks. The stories fit tightly together to forms a great masterpiece of a film aimed at stretching boundaries and your mind.
Forget what you know- learn something wonderful - that something wonderful is CARAMEL !
