Review of Capturing the Friedmans (2003) by Amrit S — 12 Jun 2007
This is probably the best documentary I have seen, and will ever see. Granted, Andrew Jarecki was lucky to receive so much help from his subjects (the Friedmans), but his handling of the material is incredible.
Masterfully edited and compiled. Watch it, and you'll see what I mean. It moves from being about one family's horrific scandal to surround the community they lived in, and eventually pulls in the viewer too.
Just how much faith should we put in our memories? Have attitudes towards paedophilia moved on from the '80s? What, after all, IS a paedophile, exactly? These were some of the questions I had after this film.
Brilliant.
