Review of Capturing the Friedmans (2003) by Fraser M — 13 Mar 2009
This is a well made documentary that definately raises questions. What is shocking about this documentary (besides the charges leveled against the Friedman family) is that so much of the situation was filmed.
In movies like The Blair Witch Project and Cloverfield, the viewer could constantly ask "why would you keep filming". This is the case with Capturing the Friedmans, but of course unlike the previously mentioned films, Capturing the Friedmans is real.
You constantly wonder, "why would you want to keep the destruction of your family on tape". The Friedmans are a strange family with lots of problems, unspoken and spoken. The documentary does a great job on raising the questions of "who's lying" and the most obvious answer is that everyone is lying about something, but it is unclear what.
The DVD also contains very informative footage that was left out of the film and other evidence not seen in the film.
