Review of Captivity (2007) by Christian H — 04 Sep 2010
Captivity is another entry in a long line of so-called "torture porn films" like Saw, Hostel, Turistas, Martyrs, etc., and unfortunately Captivity falls into the bottom percentage of the genre.
It has a premise reminiscent in certain ways of the beginning of Park Chan Wook's Oldboy--someone is kidnapping people, keeping them locked up, and slowly torturing them to death. Captivity features some genuinely brutal moments, but its plot twists are completely evident from the beginning and there are not enough brutal moments to give it a place alongside Saw or Hostel.
Captivity has some interesting commentary upon celebrities and our obsession with them, but this ultimately falls flat due to the film's inability to properly develop these themes in an intellectual fashion.
If you're going to watch torture porn, watch Saw, Hostel, or Martyrs instead.
