Review of Captain Ron (1992) by David G — 17 Jul 2011
Bland but harmless family adventure comedy about a Chicago businessman (Martin Short) who inherits his long lost uncle's yacht and hires the eccentric Captain Ron (Kurt Russell) to take him and his annoying 2.
4 children family on a Caribbean Cruise. Cue wacky hijinks involving pirates, guerrillas, pratfalls, tattoos and, uh, Monopoly. While certainly not a flick that anyone involved can be particularly proud of, Captain Ron is often unfairly labelled as a disaster.
Yes, it's childish and predictable but the dependably funny Martin Short and ever-charismatic Kurt Russell hold it together. Russell in particular shines as the titular sailor - a half Snake Plissken, half Crocodile Dundee, eternally optimistic misfit who's only ever truly happy when knocking back a brewski at the helm.
