Review of Captain Fantastic (2016) by Tatsuhito K — 07 Jul 2016
One of the most original, thought-provoking, and heartwarming films of 2016. Though it's not without cliches, I found the story relatable and emotionally engaging. Viggo Mortensen is at the top of his game as the idealistic, hippie father who raises his children out in the woods, and the child actors, all of whom are perfectly cast, are equally terrific.
Just when you think you know where this is going, Captain Fantastic takes turns you don't see coming. It's sweet, funny, often sad, but charming and full of heart. One of my favorite films of the year.
I smiled, I laughed throughout, I cried a bit (so did many people in my theater. It's normal, ok?) It sticks with you.
