Review of Captain Fantastic (2016) by Jayne J — 02 Sep 2016
Plot is pretty far divorced from reality. Most loner/survivalists are, first of all, not that organized, especially if they have a whole bus load of children to raise. It pushes all the right humanist, liberal, anti-consumerist buttons (some of mine too), but the situation and characters are so far-fetched, it's hard to enter into the movie's reality.
Explaining the mother's struggles as a reason to "take to the woods" is an attempt at grounding this plot, I suppose, but didn't work for me. In the end, just another Hollywood fantasy, right up to the perfectly arranged flowers in the girls' hair.
