Review of Captain Fantastic (2016) by Richard S — 02 Aug 2017
The film follows an eccentric and unconventional family who have to an extent ditched modern day society to live and educate themselves in the wild. The big drama arrives when the mother of the family passes away and the father then struggles to keep his family together.
The childrens' grandfather wishes to take them into his care, away from the father and you'd think this might be where the big emotional impact of the film would hit but it doesn't because in the end the audiences' sympathy lies with the children as the father continues to place them in increasingly dangerous situations in order for them to live out his ideal of what their lives must be.
There are lots of messages in here about anti capitalism and anti establishment but overall I'm not sure what the film was trying to say. It certainly didn't lay our sympathies with the father and the way he chooses to bring up his children.
Not so much Captain Fantastic, perhaps Captain OK.
