Review of Captain Fantastic (2016) by Bindi E — 29 Sep 2016
It's very watchable and has some beautiful and funny moments. It did not objectify women in any way and all credit for featuring mental illness without judgement. Where it fell down was in the exposition.
I don't think a modern audience buys into unrestrained raging/anguish creating immediate change anymore. I wondered if somewhere in its production there was a clash between two opposing styles resulting in this unsatisfactory hybrid.
The weird embracing of middle-American values made no sense at all. A shame because it had some masterstrokes such as the silent reading at the breakfast table, and the scene with the policeman in the bus.
