Review of Captain Fantastic (2016) by Gary D — 15 Jul 2016
The film is filled with ignorant cliche. 12% of American children are home schooled, four percent in unstructured curriculums. Many people live "off the grid" and there are many non-traditional primary, secondary, and universities in the world (look up the Waldorf School). My daughter (MD and soon to be a PhD) commented that cuts and bruises from an active lifestyle and Child Abuse are far from close to each other. Also there is a wide spectrum between living in the woods and violent video games. Remember that 96% of family households have a television, that means 4% do not and I would think that many additional families only watch selectively with their children (as we did). By the way, the Bill of Rights is taught in the 4th grade in the Common Core Curriculum. Oh, and giving a curious small child the "Joy of Sex" is not appropriate educating. Answering questions, generated by the child is.
As my wife would say; It's only a film.
Additionally, I have a PhD in education.
