Review of Captain Fantastic (2016) by Ezgi E — 15 Oct 2016
Finally I got to watch this at the cinema! What a movie!
Although I always enjoy watching Viggo Mortensen's movies (even his foreign-language ones), this one is really special. I think it shows his best performance to date! He portrays the father, who is like a tribal chieftain, and who is emotional, stubborn, commanding, likeable&unlikeable. His character is like the definition his daughter expresses about Humbert Humbert from the novel Lolita. One cannot help but feel sorry for him, although he actually abuses his children. What makes this movie so powerful is certainly the chemistry between the actors. All child actors are amazing and one can really sense the warmth and support between them all, as if they're a real family.
The landscape shots, editing, dialogues and the directing are all also well made. Genuine movies like this should be supported.
I really think that this year so far has really good movies with strong performances, unlike last year, where even the Oscar nominated movies and performances were mediocre.
