Review of Captain Fantastic (2016) by Dione A — 30 Jul 2016
Terrible movie. There is absolutely no nuance to this script--all things off the grid equal good; all things mainstream bad. A good example is when the family does begin its trek into "civilization" and the kids wonder if everyone is sick because they are ALL fat (cue shots of everybody but the central family walking around with at least 100 pounds of extra weight).
When Frank Langella and Ann Dowd show up about 2/3 of the way into the movie as the dreaded conventional grandparents, they at least deliver their lines with subtlety. Sadly they are in the film for a brief, brief time. Steve Zahn and Kathryn Hahn try really hard to bring that same subtlety to their roles but, alas, they are just slightly better than cartoons. I cannot recommend this movie.
