Review of Captain Fantastic (2016) by Filipe C — 09 Jul 2016
In a world in which we seem disconnected, distant, losing touch with reality and severely lacking critical thinking (that, it is so often done for us) Captain Fantastic comes along to offer a fascinating perspective on parenting and education.
Written and directed by long time actor Matt Ross, the film conveys the kind of honesty rarely seen in contemporary cinema, the type that asks viewers to be engaged, both emotionally and intellectually.
And just when you think you have it all figured out, when you think the rhetoric is all but stagnant, Ross pulls the plug and asks the difficult questions, embarking on the journey alongside his characters.
After all, he too is exploring, accepting his limitations and uncertainties. The result is nothing short but admirable, especially when the proceedings are led by a penetrating, complex and tough performance by Viggo Mortensen.
