Review of Captain Corelli's Mandolin (2001) by Chad G — 28 Feb 2008
While this isn't the best film ever made on WWII, I appreciated the story as it highlights a little known aspect of the war besides the American and British view.
As a history teacher, I was inspired to do some research on the events of the film and discovered some tragic history as well as more appreciation for the Italians than they are generally given. We tend to look down on them in this war as being fickle and pathetic fighters. However, it took spine to begin fighting the Germans, knowing their fate would be worse if captured.
I enjoyed the film for what it was, understanding that it was somewhat romanticized.
