A Big Project .... far too much material for one film. The 'readability' of the original novel led to enormous popularity and an impossible task for the scriptwriter and director. The horror, the pathos, the betrayal and the impossible choices are all presented, but not in the devastating clarity of the book.
A work of art, nonetheless.
