Review of Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) by Paul J — 10 May 2015
Easily the most violent Marvel movie to date. But fear not, the intense action never overshadows the characters. By the end, we care a great deal about Cpt. America, Black Widow & even the Winter Soldier, who is a fantastic villain.
His scary demeanor is accompanied by a brilliant musical sound/theme. Best of all, for the first time, Nick Fury gets plenty to do. His car chase scene is a standout sequence. In fact, there are half a dozen superb action sequences that blew me away.
The fight scenes are brutal and very complex. The story has a 70's crime feel and I love the fact that Capt. America is becoming disillusioned about the US and being a soldier. Once again, ironically, he's the one that brings up the debate about running the world with artillery and fear.
Trust is the key component throughout the film. Not just our main character trusting Shield but even Nick Fury and Black Widow are under question about who they can trust. There's also sweet chemistry between Evan & Johansson and it was a treat to see Redford in a strong turn.
It may not have the heart, humor and innocence of the first one, but this sequel is grittier, darker and extremely captivating. The influence of The Dark Knight is clearly felt, both in the style of the film and its thrilling score.
Politically too, it sets up its POV within seconds, "On the Left", as he keeps saying. Subtle but brilliant.
