Review of Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) by Brandon C — 10 Nov 2015

What do you get when you cross Captain America with the All the President's Men? You get a politically-charged comic book superhero movie that although very satisfying on the whole, will lose some of your core audience because children sadly are not fully invested in political thrillers.

Our story follows Captain America, Black Widow, and Nick Fury as they try to uncover a deep conspiracy theory that involves the government and its connection to a secret third party assassin called the Winter Soldier. Who apparently has been around for over 50 years; and does he have a connection with Captain America? You'll have to watch the movie to see, believe me if you know the story it's no surprise but it is very satisfying.

This movie is a very ambitious project for Marvel trying to reach away from the fantastic into the almost realistic and contemporary of causes because Captain America can deal with a certain fear mongering, terror fueled, post 9/11 thought process that America is sadly still in. Although it will not fully admit it to anybody even themselves themselves. Performances are amazing especially from from Chris Evans Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L Jackson, Anthony Mackie, and most of all from the surprise performance of Robert Redford who is amazing and we'll casted seeing as he was in All the President's Men and is very familiar with political thrillers. Even though there isn't as much action as there are in previous Marvel entries in the MCU.

Winter Soldier does have its moments of action and and messages of all the political rhetoric speak true to contemporary audiences if you're willing to listen. Sadly most people that go to these films do not want to listen to political rhetoric, I'm one that doesn't mind political messages and ideas that help us try to become a better American society, and put us back into a more simpler time. In conclusion, where the story is dark in the town and message it makes up for it with a completely satisfying story and the hope that there can be a return to those previously stated simple times. Captain America the Winter Soldier is one of the best and more adult themed entries into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is a welcome addition and one of the best ones overall but where it exceeds in mostly everything it lacks one major thing and that is FUN. Where we will find more fun is in the next entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and I will talk about it here next time. That is that of course being James Gunn's The Guardians of the Galaxy.
