Review of Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) by Freddie K — 07 Aug 2016
"Who the hell is Bucky?".
It's not often that a film with the scale and size of a superhero film can so easily pull back a disappointing start, but damn....well done.
So, the good? Well, this is a significant improvement over the first film. We have an antagonist, The Winter Soldier, that radiates lethality despite being part of a eerie bigger picture that once it kicks in, REALLY does kick in. I'm serious, when this film find's it's rhythm, it is a continuous cycle of 'ahh that's very clever!' and 'holy shit!' moments. This is a very brave Marvel film in terms of brutality and threat. It's the closest we've had to realistic feeling danger....I believe ever in this type of film. Falcon and Widow are as good as always and add a certain sense of balanced support to our Captain America character.
So what wasn't good? It's a little nit picking to be fair. I would've liked to have seen more of the winter soldier's birth as well as a little more charisma from the Captain himself. The start of this film was very slow and draggy, but it picked itself up and the previous events seemed to slot into place well. Combine that with great action sets and you've got a solid, decently acted and suspenseful superhero movie.
I'd also like to give props to the soundtrack especially on that focused around the Winter Soldier himself, very ominous and impressive.
If it's all uphill, I can't wait to see what Civil War has to offer....fingers crossed!!!
B+.
76/100.
