Review of Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) by Eric K — 19 May 2017
This movie amplifies everything good about The First Avenger, while establishing the new role of Captain America in his new time period. The film also delves into the inner workings of shield, with Nick Fury being portrayed as a complex character.
This is also the best performance by Scarlet Johansson in a Marvel movie to date, whether it be action or character development. Anthony Mackie is a welcome addition as Falcon, and Robert Redford plays an interesting, if underdeveloped, villain.
It should be said, however, that The Winter Soldier (the character) has a relatively minor role, so it doesn't make much sense that the movie is named for him. The movie also delves into the issue of freedom versus security, and it really makes you think.
All in all, The Winter Soldier is a coming out party for the Russo Brothers, and it makes me even more exited for Civil War.
