Review of Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) by Wayne K — 19 Mar 2018
A solidly entertaining, somewhat thought-provoking action romp starring the always watchable Chris Evans, completely at ease with his Captain America persona after a single standalone movie and an assembly piece.
It's admirably easy to understand if you haven't seen The First Avenger, and it doesn't get so overcomplicated that it becomes impossible to follow. It's chock full of the comic book exposition necessary to lay out the story, but it's not boring at any point and plenty of time is given to character interactions and banter, the same formula which made Avengers Assemble such a success.
The hand-to-hand combat is shot far too close and edited so choppily that it can quickly become nauseating to watch. It's also weighed down by formulaic twists like surprise betrayals, needing to destroying things to save the world and, possibly my least favourite, fake-out deaths.
But aside from the odd weak link, it's a highly entertaining film that you could watch multiple times and still never tire of.
