Review of Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) by Felipe C — 27 Feb 2014
Joe Johnston and Kevin Feige deliver with this wonderful adaptation of my favorite super hero of all time. Taking out my biases, the film is very solid and well executed. There were layers within the characters and the story carries weight unlike other Marvel movies (except Iron Man).
The thing I love about Captain America is Chris Evans' performance as Steve Rogers. Unlike other cookie cutter super heroes we are used to seeing, there is a great sense of old school patriotism, humanity and morality.
Hugo Weaving's Red Skull was amazing but it felt underutilized, probably due to time allotment. The supporting characters were all great and served the story well. The only problem I had with this film was the montage sequence of Captain America and his Howling Commandos.
Seeing him in missions would have defined Captain America and the stuff he did during the war. It would have made the last part of the film stronger. Granted, the film acted like a bridge to Marvel's The Avengers.
Overall, I give this movie a 4 for a great story of what was once a propaganda character, the strong delivery by the actors that played them and fun time at the theaters.
