Review of Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) by Johnathon W — 26 Mar 2018
Well-crafted and extremely fun adventure film that works on every level but lacks a the bit of sub-text that pushes it over the top. It's simply a straight good vs. evil story, that while enjoyable, doesn't resonate as much as "X-Men: 1st Class" or "Dark Knight", providing no shades of gray to make you think (for example, the Howling Commandos is an inter-racial military unit in what was then a segregated U.
S. military is never addressed). However, there is still plenty to like, especially comic book fans who will be freeze framing every second of this film for the numerous Easter Eggs. Plus, both Chris Evans & Hugo Weaving shine in their respective roles of Captain America & the Red Skull.
A very good film but it could have been great.
