Review of Capone (2020) by B52Nuker — 13 Sep 2020
Reluctantly upped this to 3, for ambition and cinematography only. Deadly dull, aimless and frustrating script, which hamstrung both Hardy and Trank, though I suspect both had met their match in material and character. The verdict is beginning to appear that Trank is no Tarantino (note: I have reservations that Tarantino is no Tarantino) as the shapelessness and leaden pacing of this film demonstrates. The repetitive focus on Hardy's immobile and expressionless face reminded me of the lazy writing/direction that has overtaken The Handmaid's Tale with its once thrilling but now tiresome reliance on Offred's skyward stare (at least it evokes her vengefulness). I'd like to see Hardy pull back from the Gonzo and hold it in reserve for a project with demonstrable substance. I can't imagine he found any in the script he saw when he signed on.
There was an interesting idea here that went wildly awry.
