Review of Cape Fear (1991) by Gimly M — 24 Apr 2015
A disappointment. I gave it 3 stars, but it's closer to 2.5, actually. Why this is so appreciated (7.3 on IMDb) is quite beyond me. I had high hopes after seeing the scene where De Niro chats up the daughter (and knowing the script from the 1962 version, which was quite good), but that turned out to be the only highlight.
The background music is poorly (and poorly applied), some actions don't make much sense, and the final 20 minutes are downright ludicrous (about as ludicrous as the ending of "The Vanishing").
The only good thing is the quality of the actors, especially that of Juliette Lewis. In short, if Scorcese ever had a finest hour, this was not it.
