Review of Cape Fear (1991) by Andrew T — 19 Sep 2011
Nick Nolte's lawyer and his family's torment at the hands of violent rapist De Niro provides a rollercoaster of frustration and a growing sense of insecurity. The fact that De Niro acts like a calm gentleman in the majority of the film is more powerful than what most would suspect for a mad could-be killer.
The desperation of Holte's is felt by the audience throughout the film as he makes various attempts to thwart his pursuer. The private detective played by Joe Don Baker provides some laughs through his false confidence at catching the ex-convict.
One scene dragged on for a very long time but the usual quick pace will keep your eyes glued on the screen. The grand finale on the house boat will be memorable to all who see it, perfectly executing the showdown which the quality of the film deserved.
