Review of Cape Fear (1991) by Max W — 21 Jun 2009
I didn't know this was a remake. Someone I told asked me if it was the original, and I had no idea. The original is from 1962, with Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum (who both have cameos here), the roles here played by Nick Nolte and Robert DeNiro.
Cripes, it's creepy. Good performances all around, in a very stylized production. Scorsese takes a lot from that original, I imagine, including Bernard Herrmann's score and early-horror-style zooms and quick cuts.
Pretty intense for a good long while, and I'm still creeped out by DeNiro. This was his last Oscar nomination to date. That should really be fixed.
