Review of Cape Fear (1991) by Brian M — 15 Dec 2009
The plot is wonderfully amazing and frighteningly scary. Cape Fear is a well-made, tautly directed thriller by Martin Scorcese with knockout performances from Robert DeNiro and Nick Nolte who were brilliant. The photography and editing are first-rate and there is genuine suspense as the sadistic Max Cady (Robert DeNiro), an ex-convict stalks the family of his former lawyer (Nick Nolte) who lets him get eleven years in prison because he withheld legal information from the court that would have given Cady only one or two years max in jail. Robert DeNiro (an Oscar nominated performance) plays a very convincing psychopath. Best Supporting Actress nominee Juliette Lewis shines as the sexually curious daughter. It was eerie but the most intriguing aspect of the film is her attraction towards Cady, who is ready and willing to take advantage of her budding sexuality.
The score is also very good with a chilling tune symbolizing DeNiro's malevolent and dangerous character as the tension builds to the end of the film.
