Review of Cape Fear (1991) by Whitney S — 13 Oct 2012
The film isn't incompetent by any means; it's actually rather skilfully made, especially as one watches the behind-the-scenes footage. It's also an adequate update on the original '60s thriller starring Gregory Peck (who makes a cameo here as Cady's lawyer).
The problem lies with the unnecessary feel of it all. Why? The original is great. Just because it can be made, doesn't mean it should be. Critics losing their mind over another Scorsese picture featuring De Niro also doesn't benefit this otherwise average outing.
I ask anyone: If neither Scorsese and De Niro were involved and the film was otherwise the same (Nolte, Lange and Lewis intact), would there still be the acclaim there is for it? The answer in my eyes is a resounding no.
