Review of Cape Fear (1991) by Matt M — 14 Jan 2013
A convicted rapist stalks the family of the lawyer who defended him. With the remake of Thompson's Cape Fear, Scorsese updates the audience perception of a remake, by using the same structure, cast a lot of the actors of the original in supporting roles and using the same score.
The end product is a great post-modernist thriller which updates but doesn't even attempt to overshadow the original, actually paying homage to it and the old fashioned breed of stalker thrillers.
The cinematography and colour saturation contributes to building a very intense atmosphere and De jjNiro's performance as the violent but intelligent criminal is among his most haunting.
