Review of Cape Fear (1991) by Liam C — 08 Dec 2013

I don't think Robert De Niro is that great of an actor, or should I say, I don't think he's that great of an actor anymore. This has to be one of the last times he tried before going on auto pilot for the next 20 years because he was legitimately terrifying in this movie.

He didnt scare me but the lengths that his character goes through just to torment this family is a terrifying watch! De Niro was outstanding here! Some of his best work. The southern voice sort of annoyed me at first, I just thought, 'why?' That seems to be the go-to accent in movies but then again, it made the character feel more real and the voice didnt go over the top and sound silly.

De Niro has a very recognisable and distinctive face but even with that he makes the character his own, and, like I said, it was terrifying. Everyone else gave great performances too, especially Nick Nolte who acts like I've never seen him act before and it was refreshing and it was great to have that little cameo with Gregory Peck; that was a nice touch.

But it's really pointless to name all the actors individually because they were all brilliant! Every. Single. One. Scorsese is a funny director, he never has a style or any quirks that you could tell that it was him who made the movie.

I've seen a few films by him now and each one had its own look and feel to it but that just proves how great he is, this film had a very gritty feel which is, of course, the point he's one of my favourite directors but I thought I should just mention it.

The plot moved at a brisk pace, it was always interesting and it was a great time. 5/5 How can you not like it?
