Review of Cape Fear (1991) by Arkham A — 05 Jul 2014
Although I cannot comment on the film's quality as a remake because I have not seen the original, this is definitely a good suspense thriller with intense directing from Scorsese and an extremely menacing performance by De Niro. However, it is largely held back by Juliet Lewis's awful acting as the daughter, which unintentionally makes her character seem like she has some mental disability. The film also feels cheesy and ridiculous at times with De Niro's character literally becoming an indestructible slasher movie villain at points, which is probably intentional but it does not always work, as it often robs the film of its believability. I would still recommend it but it does not hold a candle to some of Scorsese's other work in my opinion.
