It's brilliance is discovered when you can relate to the characters. For me, these people were mere replications of kids I went to middle school with, never mind high school. And the ending, a shift from the notion that the guy has to get the best friend ala "Some Kind of Wonderful" may not be refreshing but it's a nice twist none the less.
