Review of Can't Buy Me Lunch: Another Look at The Rutles (2003) by Wolf B — 23 Jan 2007
Eric Idle and his musical friends return in this sequel to one of the funniest mockumentaries of all time, and in the process lose all the magic that made the first film so fresh and funny. None of the original actors (apart from Idle) return, with the band themselves appearing only in recycled footage and outtakes from the first film.
Most of the new material here consists of interviews with celebrities (including David Bowie, Carrie Fisher, Jewel, Bonnie Raitt, Robin Williams, Tom Hanks, and Steve Martin) professing their love of the fictitious group.
(An inspired exception is Billy Connolly, who only has harsh things to say about the band.) There are some mild chuckles sprinkled throughout, and a few new Rutle songs on the soundtrack, but overall this pale imitation just tries much too hard, with forced humor that doesn't match the original.
Not terrible, but disappointing in its over-eagerness.
