Review of Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death (1989) by J.p. L — 11 Jan 2008
A B movie with preposterous plot and acting, it's tolerable because it doesn't take itself too seriously. Some of the jokes are actually pretty good. What makes it worth watching is that it actually engages with feminism in a semi-serious way. I can't resist borrowing Samuel Johnson's infamous allusion: A Hollywood movie addressing feminism is like a dog walking on its hind legs. It is not done well; but you are surprised to find it done at all.
Lastly, I propose that whenever HBO's Bill Maher show is off they air, they play his scenes from this movie in lieu of reruns. He's as good at taking pratfalls as celebrities are at talking about politics.
