Review of Cannibal! The Musical (1996) by Jessicaann D — 24 Oct 2007
Yes it is juvenile and gorey, but all in all this is a pretty funny film for such a low budget affair. Of course much of this is due to Trey Parker and Matt Stone (creators of South Park), their ridiculously likable brand of humour. The songs are insane and dorky, but they are also catchy, much like the songs from 'Team America: World Police'.
This is nowhere near the genius of their greatest film to date 'South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut', but is an interesting film to see where they started from.
It is the story of a group of men traveling through the Rocky Mountains looking for gold when circumstances, trappers and weather lead them to...cannibalism.
Parker's sense of what is completely inappropriate (songs alluding to having sex with his horse) and what will push people's buttons (Japanese people playing Native Americans) starts here. No matter how rough this film is, the genius is clearly apparent underneath.
