Review of Cannibal Holocaust (1980) by Arleen P — 02 Dec 2011
The nastiest of all video nasties I've seen. I totally disagree with Deodato's insistence to kill 7 live animals in the film, that was disgusting and he was rightfully sentenced for that. I didn't see it as necessary and they were the only parts of the film where I truly had to look away.
The acting was awful but then I guess nobody expected any awards. To it's credit, the film was sick and that was the intention and in many cases the scenes looked very real, so much so that the director was actually arrested for murder after it's release.
That's a feather in the cap for a video nasty director I suppose. I dread to think about the effect that the making of this film had on the younger members of the idiginous tribes used in the film.
It appeared to me that a lot of the sexual and brutal scenes had children present and that is way out of order. The film-makers were also clearly disgusting scumbags. As I think about it, some of the most disgusting films I've seen are all made by Italians, note to self.
