Review of Cannibal Holocaust (1980) by Alan M — 26 Jun 2009

This is one film that definately lived up to the hype that it was given. I think that this one deserves to be banned in all those countries. I've seen people say that this is nothing compared to Faces of Death but I was only mildly disturbed by Faces of Death. Cannibal Holocaust thoroughly disturbed me. I kept circulating the scenes in my head trying to convince myself that I was imagining what I was watching. Now that's effective film making.

Yes Deodato is probably the most hated man in the business but can you really blame people. This movie is absolutly horrifying. There is an actual plot to this one too it's not just gore for the sake of gore. There is a political theme to this.

Now let's talk gore and effects. The effects look shockingly real and are quite disturbing. There are many rape sequences that are incredibly graphic and dispicable. A native woman is impaled after being raped by the documentary makers and they gloat about it. Deodato truly is a horror director. Forget Tobe Hooper, Texas Chainsaw has nothing on this movie. Yes there is some real gore in this movie that is completely unnecessary. A turtle, pig, spider-monkey, snake, and a marsupial? are killed in viscious fashions.

Deodato had to go to court to prove that the movie he made was fake and that people weren't watching a snuff film. I can see why viewers thought it was real though.

I don't know whether to recommend this movie or to warn you to stay away from it because it is a vile piece of work although it is quite a good movie and has an important message to it.

The Most Messed Up Part of the movie: I want to say the turtle scene but I think the Punishment for Adulteration is alot more disturbing.
